Understanding the demands of the Circular Economy.

For over half a century Root Cause Analysis (RCA) has been used to identify and address the causes of (largely) negative events, no matter how small or insignificant they may have appeared at first inspection. From this, organisations were able to control, eliminate or change their systems and behaviours to such an extent that the likelihood of a repeat problem was reduced or, in some cases, removed altogether.  Unsurprisingly it only took a few baby-steps to move from the reactive to the proactive and from here the concept of marginal gains (aka the 1% rule) was established.

In the mid to late 00’s RCA became what could be described as the ‘analytical engine’ of the marginal gains world.  A tool that could not only decipher complex systems and reveal potential advantages, but one that could greatly simplify implementation and provide crucial insights into the wider impacts of change.   Fast-forward a decade and RCA has found another new position as the ideas engine behind greater sustainability and a transition to a truly circular economy.

Increasingly the circular economy is viewed as a realistic and transferable alternative to the traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose).  In the circular model we keep resources as long as possible, extracting value from them at strategically significant points of their life-cycle. Once exhausted we then recover and regenerate the products or materials (or ideas) for rebuild or reintegration. The overall aim is an economic system that eliminates all unnecessary waste and optimises the continual uses of resources – more recognisable as a metabolism or self-supporting living system than any machine.

We already know any transition to a genuine circular economy will entail virtually infinite changes. Shifting economic activity away from our 250-year-old extractive industrial model will present many challenges.  Organisations simply won’t be able to rely on isolated changes and must pursue an integrated, holistic and complex approach to change.  For organisations looking to make this shift, the RCA methodology will provide the essential framework. Using Sologic RCA, organisations can build long-term resilience, reduce vulnerability and uncertainty, and generate the synthesises essential to many new fields of operation.

Any methodology that is proven to make complex systems less prone to meltdown, delivers mission-critical marginal gains, reveals hidden risk and supports compliance is ideally suited to the inevitable demands of the circular economy.
